The Premier Division Coral Gables Athletics pulled off the three-peat by defeating the Miami Rays in the Premier Division Championship Series 2 games to 1 to claim their 11th title in the South Florida Baseball League. With that title, the A’s further cemented their status as the winningest team in league history! What an accomplishment! In the final game, the A’s unloaded on Rays pitching and won in a rout 13-3. They had previously come from behind to beat the Miami Red Sox 4-3 in the bottom of the 12th and the Rays knocked out the Perrine Monarchs 8-4 in the two semifinal games leading up to the championship series.
Meanwhile, in the Senior Division, the Southern Yankees survived a testy Miami Black Bats team, scoring two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth to come from behind in a wild 14-13 contest to advance to the semifinals against top-seed Davie Tigers this coming Sunday October 19. In the other quarterfinals game, the South Florida Beach Bums upset a very tough Miami Pirates club 4-0, after getting a 1-0 early lead and adding three runs late. The Bums will now take on the veteran Miami Brewers in the second semifinal game for Senior Division this Sunday October 19.
Finally, the defending champions, Miramar Rangers, take on the former champions Palm Beach Angels in the Masters Division best of three Championship Series starting October 26. To get to the championship series, the Rangers blasted the South Florida Dodgers 17-11 and the Angels got by the Dade Nationals 9-3 in the Masters Division semifinals.
