Miami Red Sox lose in semi-finals in July 4 Star & Stripes Cash Prize Tournament Jupiter FLA July 5, 2011
The Miami Red Sox tournament team tied for third place in the Stars & Stripes cash prize tournament held over the July 4th holiday weekend at theRoger Dean Stadium complex in Jupiter, Florida.  In addition to the Miami Red Sox, the six team tournament drew four teams from Orlando and one team from Fort Lauderdale, Team USA.  The cash prize tournament, sponsored by USSSA Baseball, offered $2000 to the winner and $1000 to the runner up.Game 1:  Matt Leban pitched a complete game and collected three hits, leading Miami to a 5-2 win over the Orlando Vipers in the tournament opener.
Game 2:  The Sox lose in a blow out, 13-3, to the Orlando Rays as the team played sloppy and several key players were injured.  Due to a half day rain delay the Sox lost some key players due to prior commitments.  Ouch!
Game 3:  Hall of Famer, John Emmons, pitched a gem of a game against the defending champions, Orlando Cardinals, going seven innings before leaving the game with a 5-2 lead.  He picked off two runners and the team played great defense and added a double play to help dominate early.  Clearly dominant, the Cards were only too happy to see him depart.  Sadly, a Sox defensive collapse in the seventh yielded four runs and the Orlando Cards rallied to win 6-5.  Next up:  With a 1-2 record, it was do-or-die for the Sox against the team that had earlier beaten the Cardinals, the Orlando Yankees.
Game 4:  Hall of Famer, Bobby Greenwald, picked up the 435th win of his career as he dominated the hot hitting Orlando Yankees and the Red Sox rallied to win 3-2.  Prior to striking for three runs in the seventh on a two run double by Ulpi Puentes and an RBI single by Alberto Rodriguez, the Orlando Cardinals pitcher had struck out 12 batters in six innings.  With the win, the Red Sox advanced to the semi-finals while sending the Yankees packing.
Game 5:  Veteran George Kenhan took the hill as the Sox, with their 2-2 record, advanced to the semi-final game against top seeded Orlando Cardinals.  The Red Sox, playing with a skeleton crew, were up to the challenge but fell behind early 2-0 with a monster rain storm approaching.  Ultimately, the Red Sox were to be left tormented after the game was called due to a monsoon with a score of 4-2 in favor of the Cardinals.  And just like that the tournament was over.  But what a tournament and what thrill!  Next up, Florida Cup baseball tournament held in Miami FLA over the Labor Day weekend, September 3-5, 2011.  Players interested in joining the league team in the tournament should contact the league office asap.

Spring 2011 SeasonThe SFBL is proud to announce that opening day for the Fall 2011 Season is set for April 3, 2011.  This will be our 19th year of operation and our 38th consecutive season!  March 21, 2011
Fall 2010 Premier Division ChampionshipWith a 14-10 win over the Dade Tigers, the Coral Gables Athletics made SFBL history as they won their 4th consecutive and 8th overall SFBL championship.  The A’s finished off the season with 9 consecutive wins before going into the playoffs and ended up winning every game they played in 2011.  The A’s were led all season by division triple crown winner and MVP, Chicho Vengoechea.  The feat was the first time in Premier Division history.  The A’s were also led by Alex Arteaga on the hill who won his 3rd consecutive Cy Young Award.  In order to reach the championship, the Tigers defeated the Miami Jays 9-5 while the A’s knocked out the Miami Red Sox 15-0. March 21, 2011
Fall 2010 Senior Division ChampionshipAfter two straight seasons of Miami Brewers dominance with two consecutive championships, the Fort Lauderdale Yankees found themselves back atop the division with their 5th SFBL Championship as they defeated the Miami Blues 6-5.  The game was a memorable one as two of the league’s biggest arms faced off with Drew Medina squaring up against Billy Zoffinger.  Both pitchers threw great games but the Yanks bats would be too much as familiar faces (Ryan Scott and Claude Love) each homered to lead the Yanks to another championship.  In order to reach the championship, the Blues knocked out the Miami Brewers 12-2 while the Yanks snuck by the Southern Yankees by 1 run. March 21, 2011
Fall 2010 Masters’ Division ChampionshipIn just their first season, the South Florida Giants combined some great hitting with dominant pitching to take home their first ever SFBL Championship as they defeated the South Florida Dodgers 12-2.  The Giants were led all season by Andy Celaya who led the league in just about every category including HR, BA and RBI to take home the season’s Triple Crown Award, the first time ever.  His final numbers in these areas also broke each of the individual season records.  Absolutely incredible feat.  The Giants were also led by Jay Habacht on the mound as he led the league in wins, Ks and ERA to take home the season’s Cy Young winner. March 14, 2011
SFBL Represents at 11th Annual MSBL Disney ClassicThe SFBL was once again represented well at this year’s Disney Holiday Classic with the Dade Tigers and Coral Gables Athletics playing in the 30+ and 18+ divisions respectively. The Dade Tigers, managed by Paul Guelmes, had a great showing as they advanced to the Quarterfinals after defeating the East Coast All Stars 15-8 in their final round robin game.  The team needed the win after dropping their first 2 games by one run a piece.  The Tigers then dropped a heart-breaker to the East Coast Rangers, 2-0 in the playoffs.

The Coral Gables Athletics, managed by Miguel Garcia, had a disappointing showing at the tournament as they failed to make the playoffs in the tournament for the first time in more than 8 years and could not defend their 2010 Championship.  The A’s won their first game 4-2 over Team USA but lost their next two games and could not advance to the playoffs.

Despite the lack of championships, it was still a great showing for the two clubs which were highlighted on youtube on the ESPN zone channel.

Local / National Tournament PlayOne of the greatest benefits of playing in the SFBL is its tie to the MSBL and the local, regional and national tournaments that SFBL teams travel to play in year round.  The SFBL hosts two tournaments locally during Memorial and Labor Day Weekends and also sends teams around the nation for MSBL regional and national tournaments.  The next tournament is the 2011 Disney Holiday Classic held at Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports.  Thus far, the Coral Gables Athletics (18+) and Dade Tigers (30+) will be taking teams as the A’s look to defend their title while Tigers go in search of their first. If you or your team is interested in playing in the upcoming Disney Holiday Classic or would like more information on other tournaments, please contact the league office directly at 305-496-2962.

SFBL Represents at 2010 Fall ClassicThe SFBL once again represented nationally as two teams from the league traveled to Jupiter / Port St Lucie for the MSBL Fall Classic tournament. Moving from Clearwater, this was the second time the MSBL utilized the Roger Dean and Tradition complexes (spring training homes of the Marlins, Mets and Cardinals) for this grand tournament. The South Florida Sea Dogs, managed by Steve Rogers, went in search of their 7th tournament championship, a national record.  The team fell short as they lost a heart-breaker in the Semi Finals of the 35+ National Division.  The Dogs went down to the Missouri Clowns (tournament champs), 9-8 on a walk off HR.  Despite the loss, it was another successful trip for Rogers and his crew.

Looking for the one championship that has slipped their grips so many times, the Coral Gables Athletics traveled to the Classic but once again fell short as they lost to the Pinellas Piranhas in the Quarterfinals of the 18+ Wood Bat Division.  The A’s finished round robin play with a 2-2 record to advance to the playoffs but fell to the Piranhas 1-0.  The Piranhas did have some South Florida ties as several players from the old Team USA played on the squad including Garrett Rogers and Jim Eddy.  Rogers won tournament MVP honors after banging 10+ hits and delivering the win in the Championship Game.

Despite the loss for the A’s, it was a great 2010 Tournament year as they claimed 3 tournament titles and combined for a 19-5 record.

Miami Brewers Claim Back-to-Back Senior Division Championships2010 has proven to be the year of the Brewer as the team who had made it to so close so many times, has now won back-to-back championship as they defeated the Coral Springs Tigers 8-6 on Sunday in the Spring 2010 Senior Division Championship Game!  The Miami Brewers were led all season on the bats and arms of George Kenhan and Javi Rodriguez as both had perfect pitching records and finished the season hitting over .475 each.  In the Championship Game, the Brewers received the big hit from Nelly “The Russian” Carreno who hit an 0-2 pitch over the fence with the bases loaded to give the Brewers their first lead of the game in the 6th and never look back as Kenhan retired 15 straight to secure the win.  This was the Brewers 2nd SFBL Championship.
The Championship Game was also the first for Eric Alter’s Tigers who finished the season 8-4 and defeated the Fort Lauderdale Yankees 12-11 in a thrilling Broward County Championship to advance to the Senior Division Championship.  The Brewers advanced to the Championship after crushing the Miami Black Bats 18-4.
In regular season play, the batting champion would prove to be Marc Morrow (CS Tigers) who edged out Ryan Scott (FtL Yankees).  Morrow finished the season with a .600 batting average and 24 hits while Scott banged out 25 hits for a .581 batting average.  Scott also led the league with 7 HRs edging out Joannis Pacheco who banged out 6 for the Florida Yankees. Jeff O’Kelly was a perfect 6-0 with 45 strikeouts to take home the Cy Young Award!

Coral Gables Athletics tie SFBL Record with 7th Championship

The Coral Gables Athletics, managed by Miguel Garcia, and led by Season MVP Alex Arteaga as well as offensive stars Chicho Vengoechea,Luis Cabral and Aron Marcinkoski defeated the Miami Police Force 7-3 on Sunday for their record, 7th SFBL Championship.  The A’s received another incredible performance from Arteaga who pitched 7 strong innings to earn the Championship win over the Police, managed by Jorge Gomez.  This was the 4th time that the teams met in the Championship with the A’s winning all fou games.  To advance to the Championship, the A’s defeated the Miami Red Sox 15-2.
The Police had a more challenging game as they defeated the Miami Jays 3-1.  The Police were led by Mark Horowitz who pitched a dominating games against the Jays while Uri Pena hit a 2 run blast that would prove to be the decisive blow.
In the regular season, several players shined.  Chaz Lemoine (Miami Jays) won the batting championship with an incredible .739 batting average (2nd highest all time) as he beat out Luis Cabral (A’s).  Luis broke the SFBL single season doubles record as he mashed out 10.  Luis and Chaz were tied with Aron Marcinkoski (A’s) for most hits (17) in the season while Aron led all players with 15 runs scored, 14 RBI and 11 SBs.  Another big feat was the one by Chicho Vengoechea (A’s) who mashed out 3 HRs and at one point in the season mashed out HRs in 4 straight games (including games from the Florida Cup).

Miami Orioles Claim 4th Masters’ TitleLed by their manager, Ernie Abreu, the Miami Orioles defeated the Kendall Metz 4-3 in the Spring 2010 Masters Division Championship Game to earn their 4th SFBL title.  The game was decided in the bottom of the 7th as the Orioles took advantage of a balk and passed ball to score the decisive run.  The Orioles had another successful season as they finished the season with a 10-1 record to earn the bye into the Championship Game!  They were led by Robik Leal who had an incredible season at the plate as he led the league with 22 hits and led his team with 18 RBI.
The Kendall Metz, managed by PC Cabrera, also had a great season and were led by John Emmons in their Semi Final win over the Broward Mets.  Emmons delivered the win and what one time in the game retired 15 straight to help the Metz advance.  The Broward Mets had a great regular season to clinch a playoff berth as they went 8-3 and were led by Ed Macdougal who won the Triple Crown as he led the league with a .636 batting average, 25 RBI and 2 HRs (2 others also hit 2 HRs).  An incredible feat!

2010 Florida CupDespite some heavy rains and wet fields, the SFBL was able to complete another successful Florida Cup during the 2010 Labor Day Weekend.  The tournament featured four top shelf teams from around Florida and ended with a trilling 14-5 win for the Jacksonville Vikings over the Coral Gables Athletics.  This was the second championship for Vikings as they also won the 2007 Florida Cup.Because the tournament only featured 4 teams, all the teams played three round robin games, but only 3 three teams advanced to the playoffs with the top seed earning the bye into the Championship Game.  After two games in round robin play, things became quite clear as the A’s and Vikings entered the game needing a win to clinch a bye after each team went 2-0.  The Vikings jumped on the A’s early as they mashed out 4 HRs in the first inning.  The A’s did make a comeback and actually out hit the Vikings but the Vikings were able to hold on and win the game 16-9.

In the other third game, the Miami Red Sox lost to the Fort Lauderdale Rays 12-2 allowing the Rays to advance to the Semi Final game against the A’s.  Both teams were 0-2 going into the game but had lost close games early and needed a win to advance.  The loser would be out of the tournament.  The Rays jumped on the back of Garrett Rogers who drove in 4 with a 2-run monster blast.

A special highlight of the tournament was a battle of all-time SFBL greats in the first game of the tournament between the Miami Red Sox and the Coral Gables Athletics as John Emmons went toe to toe with Ron Farnham in a great pitcher’s duo. In the end, Farnham got the win for the A’s in a thrilling 3-2 win!  Both pitchers were former SFBL Cy Young and Strikeout King Winners!

In the Semi’s the Rays continued to follow their leader Rogers who started the game for the Rays on the mound and looked dominant through 6.  However, the wheels came off in the final 7th inning (game shortened due to rain) as Luis Cabral hit a 3 run walk off double in the bottom half of the inning to give the A’s the thrilling 5-4 win over a very tough Rays team.

In the Championship, it was truly another offensive clinic by the Vikings as they pounded out 16 hits en route to a 14-5 win over the A’s.  The A’s were able to keep it close through 5 and had a 1 run lead going into the bottom half of the inning but fell apart in the 5th as the Vikings clubbed 2 more HRs and scored 8.  They never looked back and clinched their 2nd Florida Cup Trophy.

Congratulations to the Vikings on a great tournament and we thank all the teams that participated.  It was another memorable and successful SFBL Hardball Tournament!

Coral Gables A’s Win Inaugural Gulf Coast Classic

Looking for their 3rd tournament win of the year, the Coral Gables A’s traveled to Fort Myers for the Inaugural Gulf Coast Classic.  The tournament featured some of the best competition in South Florida.  The A’s represented the SFBL well once again as they went 5-0 and defeated the Naples Red Sox and Lee County Black Sox in the playoffs and Championship to earn their 3rd title of the year and improved to 14-0 in tournament play in 2010.  The A’s were led by Chicho Vengoechea who went 9-15 with 5 doubles, 3 RBI and 7 runs scored and earned MVP honors.  The A’s also had big performances from Alvaro Gomez and Luis Cabral.  Gomez went 8-19 with 4 doubles and 6 runs scored while Luis ended up with 6 hits.  Alex Arteaga and Jason Privett pitched gems in the playoffs to lead the A’s.  Congratulations to the A’s squad!

Cops n Robbers take home 2010 Miami Open

Combining two of the strongest teams in the SFBL proved to be a winning formula this Memorial Day Weekend as Albert Jardines and his Cops n Robbers defeated the Orlando Thunder 8-7 in a 10 inning thrilling championship game to win the 2010 Miami Open.  The Cops n Robbers were made up of the players from the Coral Gables Athletics and Miami Police Force and proved from the get go to a be a force in the tournament.Down 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth, Orlando came through in the clutch, staging a two-out & nobody-on-base rally to tie the game 7-7 off Miami starter Alvaro Gomez.  After shutting down the Miami team in the ninth, the Thunder loaded the bases on Miami reliever Luis Cabral only to be denied by a spectacular ESPN highlight play by the Miami thirdbaseman Willie Misrahi.  That’s all the motivation the Miami Cops n Robbersneeded as they led of the top of the 10th with back-to-back base hits.Aron Marcinkoski led off with a sharp single to right and Alvaro Gomez smashed the first pitch he saw against the fence to set the table.  Moments later Miami got their go-ahead RBI with two out when Alex Delgado smacked a single up the middle.  Delgado had previously smashed a two-run home run to help Miami stake their early lead.  Miami skipper Albert Jardines chipped in going 3-for-4 with two doubles.  However, just to make it interesting, the Orlando Thunder did it again – after suffering two quick outs, they loaded the bases and then, anticipating a comeback win, watched as their final batter took a full count swing and miss to end the game.In the semi-final game, the Miami Cops n Robbers cruised to a 9-4 win over the Fort Myers Marlins.  In what was a day of frustration, the Fort Myers Marlins wasted way too many opportunities to score.  Miami reliever, Jorge Gomez, kept the Marlins off balance and closed out the game with easy outs.  The Cops n Robbers continued on their scoring tear after getting shut out by Orlando’s ace in the tournament’s first game, scoring 34 runs in their subsequent three games.

Spring 2010 Season Set to Launch May 23, 2010The SFBL is proud to announce that opening day for the Spring 2010 Season is set for May 23, 2010.  This will be our 18th year of operation and our 36th consecutive season! The SFBL will once again have 3 age divisions featuring the best hardball in South Florida: 18+ Premier, 25+ Senior and 35+ Masters.

In the 18+ Premier Division, the Coral Gables Athletics will be in search of their SFBL Record 7th Championship but they will have lots of pressure from the Miami Police Force and a revamped Miami Red Sox squad.  The Miami Jays, formerly the Miami’s Band, will also look to squander those hopes.  The SFBL is also proud to welcome three new teams to the league and division who will look to compete with the most competitive 18+ division in the area.  The new teams are the: Homestead Hurricanes, Kendall Brewers, and Hollywood Royals.

In the 25+ Senior Division, the teams to beat remain the defending champs, Miami Brewers and the 4-time champs, Fort Lauderdale Yankees.  These teams have been part of the last 5 Championship games in this division.  The 25+ Senior Division will once again split into Dade and Broward Counties with 12 teams battling for a chance at the Championship.  The 35+ Masters Division champs from last season, the Broward Braves will jump into this division while the league welcomes the Palm Beach Clippers and South Florida Seminoles to the division!

In the 35+ Masters Division, the 3-time champs and Spring 2009 Finalist, Miami Orioles, will prove to be the team to beat with the Braves departure to the 25+ division.  Looking to challenge the Orioles will be two new teams, the Brew Crew and the Miami Bombers.

The SFBL would like to welcome all the new teams and league members to the SFBL and we wish everyone a successful and healthy Spring 2010 Season.  Lets play some hardball!!!!

Miami Brewers Capture First SFBL Championship0-3 to start the Fall 2009 Season, but the Miami Brewers found a way to pull it together as their chemistry led the way.  The Miami Brewers pulled together 8 wins in a row by finding ways to score a lot and shutting down opponents in the late innings.  It became a formula for their regular and post season success.  The Miami Brewers were able to advance to the SFBL Senior Division Championship Game after defeating the Southern Yankees13-4 in the Semi Finals.
The Brew Crew advanced to play the Fort Lauderdale Yankees who were in search of back-to-back championships and their 5th overall SFBL Championship.  The Brewers could not be stopped, however, and scored 14 runs on 23 hits, while allowing only 8 hits and 5 runs from the powerful offensive Yankee lineup to defeat the Yanks 14-5. The Brewers offense was sparked by Nelly the Russian with 5 hits including 2 homeruns andJavier Rodriguez with 5 hits including 3 doubles. George Kenhan went the distance allowing 8 hits and 5 runs while striking out nine.
George Kenhan was named the Senior Division MVP after leading the league with a 5-1 record and hitting .486.  A close second in the MVP race was Nelly “the Russian” Carreno who finished the season hitting .704 with 24 hits and 16 RBI.
The Fort Lauderdale Yankees had a great run at another championship as they finished their regular season with a division best 9-2-1 record.  They advanced to the championship game after defeating the Florida Yankees 12-0 in the Semi Finals.  The Florida Yankees advanced to the playoffs after defeating the Coral Springs Tigers 11-7 in a tie-break quarterfinal game.  The Yankees had some impressive feats as well as Claude Love broke the single season RBI record with 27 and mashed out 7 HRs, 2nd all time in a single season.  Ryan Scott finished second in the division with 6 Jacks.

Coral Gables Athletics Win 2010 Disney Holiday ClassicAfter six years in search of their first national tournament, the Coral Gables Athletics finally did it as they defeated the Tampa Bay Shockers (2009 18+ National Fall Classic Champs) 7-4 in the Championship of the 2010 MSBL Disney Holiday Classic.  The A’s, managed by Miguel Garcia, combined with some of the top players from the Fort Myers Hitmen, including their manager Grey Huber, to form a strong team in this very competitive 18+ Wood Bat tournament.  The A’s were led all weekend by their strong pitching and defense.   Leading the way for the A’s, as is customary, was Jason Privett who earned tournament MVP honors.  The team’s ace won the first game of round robin play by pitching a 2 hitter and taking a no-no into the 9th.  He then came back on Monday morning to close out the Championship game which was started by Matt Stubbs.  Alex Arteaga and Jaime Cruz also pitched gems for the A’s as they completed the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record while only giving up 5 earned runs the entire weekend.  Offensively, the A’s were led by the team’s captain, Albert Jardines who finished with 10 hits in the 5 games.  Alvaro Gomezalso had a huge tournament for the team as he scored 10 times atop the A’s order and mashed out 7 hits.  The two combined to seal the deal for the A’s in the Semi’s as Gomez led a tied 9th inning off with a double and scored on a single to right off the bat from Jardines. From across I75, Glenn Morris, Kris Landry and Justin Lofranco of the Hitmen had big tournaments.   Congratulations to the A’s on their big win!  January 20, 2010
SFBL Represents in 35+ Disney ClassicGoing up as the Dade County Police, the Dade Tigers and Miami Police Force, combined to play in the 35+ division of the 2010 MSBL Disney Holiday Classic.  Managed by Paul Guelmes and Fernando Puig, the Police advanced to the Quarterfinals with a big win over the Sewanhanka Indians in the final game of round robin play.  The team ended up losing in the first round of the playoffs to the Houston Astros 4-1.  The Police had some great pitching all weekend but could not come up with the key hits to keep it going.  Lincoln Moquette had one of the most impressive outings in tournament history as he started the final 2 round robin games (both played on Saturday) and then started and completed the playoff game on Sunday. The long time Lauderdale Reds ace and Dade Tigers/Miami Nationals tournament ace ended up pitching 24 innings in less than 24 hours.  An incredible feat!  Offensively, the Police were led by Upi Puente and Javi Rodriguez who each had great performances!  January 20, 2010
Fall 2009 Season in Full SwingDespite a delayed start the Fall 2009 Season is in full swing.  The season features 20 teams playing in four divisions.  For the first time in league history, the SFBL has created an Open Wood Bat Division.  There are two teams in the division, Miami Red Sox and Kendall Metz, which will play their own playoffs but will cross divisions for regular season play.  During regular season play, opposing teams will have the option to either play wood or aluminum against the two teams.  December 1, 2009
2009 Fall Classic: SFBL represented by 4 TeamsSea Dogs Capture Record 6th Tournament ChampionshipThe SFBL once again represented nationally as four teams from the league traveled to Jupiter / Port St Lucie for the MSBL Fall Classic tournament. Moving from Clearwater, this was the first time the MSBL utilized the Roger Dean and Tradition complexes (spring training homes of the Marlins, Mets and Cardinals) for this grand tournament.

The SFBL sent the South Florida Sea Dogs (35+ American), Fort Lauderdale Yankees (35+ Central), Boca Red Sox (18+ National) and Coral Gables Athletics (18+ American).

2009 would once again belong to Steve Rogers and his South Florida Sea Dogs who won their 6th MSBL Fall Classic, a national record. Assembling some of his very best players, the Dogs completed round robin play with a 3-2 record and then ran the table in the playoffs as they defeated the Delco Cobras 13-2 in the Championship Game.  The Dogs were led by Marty Stern who pitched and won 2 of the tournament games, while Jim Eddy delivered the Semi Final win!

For the first time ever, the Fort Lauderdale Yankees entered into tournament play and faired well as they completed round robin play with a 3-2 record to secure a playoff berth.  The Yanks advanced to the Quarterfinals by defeating the Susquehanna Valley Stampede by a score of 9-2 but ended up losing to the Asheville Diamondbacks (tournament champs) 14-1 in the Quarterfinals.

Another first timer to the tournament were the Boca Red Sox, managed by Eric Lyon & Shaun McAndrews, who entered into the very competitive 18+ National Division and represented well.  The team went 3-1 in round robin play to secure 2nd place in the division but ended up losing to 2008 tournament champs, the St Pete Game Cocks 9-4 in the Semi’s.  The played some great ball over the weekend but had some bad defense in the playoff game, which would prove to be too costly.

The 4th team to play in the Fall Classic were the Coral Gables Athletics, managed by Miguel Garcia, who was in search of their first national tournament championship.  2009 would not be the year for the A’s as they had their most disappointing tournament to date, finishing round robin play with a 1-2-1 record and not advancing to the playoffs for the first time in team history.

All in all, it was a great year for the SFBL at the Fall Classic as the league continues to prove that it has some of the most elite teams in the country! Congratulations to all the teams and players that participated in the tournament!  Please look for the Spring edition of the MSBL Hardball Magazine which features the Fall Classic and World Series tournaments.

For players interested in tournament play, please contact the league office or visit the MSBL national website, www.msblnational.com.  The next national tournament is the Disney Holiday Classic played in January.

A’s Capture 5th Premier Division Championship
In what was one of the more memorable championship games in Premier Division history, the Coral Gables Athletics defeated the Boca Red Sox by a score of 7-6 on 10/18/09 at Sunset Park and won their 5th SFBL Premier Division Championship.  The teams split their regular season matchup and advanced to the playoffs on hot streaks.  The A’s, managed by Miguel Garcia, were led by their ace, Matt Stubbs, who faced off against the Sox ace, Josh Remondelli.  Stubbs pitched a complete game to earn his second playoff win.The scoring started early as the Sox, managed by Eric Lyon, took a 1-0 lead in the 1st, but the A’s quickly answered as Todd Alea, the Premier Division batting champ, gave the A’s a 4-1 lead when he took Remondelli deep to left.  The shot cleared the houses that are beyond the left field fence.  The Sox were quick to answer, however, and eventually took a 6-5 lead going into the 9th.  The A’s would not falter, however, as Luis Cabral went deep to left with a man on in the top of the 9th to give the A’s the 7-6 lead and eventual win as Stubbs pitched a perfect 1-2-3 bottom half to secure the win.

It was a see-saw battle between two of the league’s best.  Congrats to both teams on great seasons.  To advance to the Championship, the Sox defeated the Lauderdale Reds while the A’s defeated the Miami Police Force.

The A’s will now square off against the Lee County Black Sox in search of their 4th Hardball Championship.

Fort Lauderdale Yankees Capture Senior Division ChampionshipThe Fort Lauderdale Yankees completed a historic season in style this past Sunday as they defeated the Miami Blues and their incredible pitching staff by a score of 11-9 to win their 4th SFBL Crown!  After completing the regular season with a 10-1 record (their only blemish was a 4-2 loss to the Blues), the Yanks defeated the Florida Yankees and Deerfield White Sox in two playoff games.  The Yanks were led as usual by their big bats as they finished the season with a team Batting Average of .391 with 5 different players hitting two HR’s apiece.  Kenny Hansley led the Yanks attack with a .571 batting average and 2 HR while driving in 10.  The Blues also had a memorable season as they chased their first SFBL Crown.  The team was led by a great pitching staff which included Andrew Lane, John Gawron and Maikel Hurtado.  Lane pitched a CG in the Dade County Championship versus the Dade Tigers to wipe out the team’s only blemish in the regular season.  The Blues first defeated the Miami Brewers to advance to the Dade County Championship Game which they won for the second straight year.  Congratulations to both teams on a great season! Spring 2008 Season Finally Comes to an End – A’s Bring Home Hardball TrophySix months overdue, but well worth the late!  The Coral Gables Athletics, managed by Miguel Garcia, finished their Spring 2008 Season yesterday as they traveled to Fort Myers to take on the Fort Myers Hitmen, manged by Grey Huber, in the Spring 2008 Hardball Championship.  The A’s were coming off their 4th Premier Division Championship and the Hitmen their 3rd Fort Myers Championship.  In a memorable game between what is becoming a true cross state rivalry, the A’s defeated the Hitmen 4-3 to take home the trophy and their 3rd Florida Hardball Championship. The last two times the teams met was last Memorial Day in the 2008 Miami Open.  The two games were each decided by one run with the A’s leaving the Hitmen on the field both times, the last of which was the Championship game of the tournament when the A’s hit a walk off single.  This Sunday’s game would be a true pitcher’s duo as Matt Stubbs and Steve Mason gave each team a run for the money.  The teams only combined for 15 hits and in the end it would be the A’s taking advantage of some late Hitmen miscues to earn the victory!  The A’s were led offensively by Leo Portes and Uri Pena who each had big games for the A’s.  Congratulations to both teams on incredible seasons and an incredible game!!! March 9, 2009

February 16, 2009
Fall 2008 Playoff Format Set / Races Heat UpThe SFBL is proud to announce the playoff format for the Fall 2008 Season.  It was been a very competitive regular season, this should prove to be a great race to the finish.  All playoffs are set to start on Sunday, February 22, 2009!

In the Master’s 35+ Division, four teams will end up in the playoffs.  The two division winners along with the two overall wildcard teams will advance to the semi-finals.  The overall best record is the #1 seed while the other division winner is the #2 seed.  The #3 and #4 seeds will be dependent on overall records.

The VASER Lipo Orioles have clinched the #1 seed with an impressive 11-1 regular season record.  The Broward Black Sox took home the American League division and will be the #2 seed while the Broward Braves with an 8-3-1 record will be the #3 seed.  At this time, one semi final game is set between the Braves and the Black Sox, but the other game is yet to be determined because the League Office has decided to allow for a wild-card playoff to determine the #4 seed.  The Lauderdale Dodgers will square off against the Kendall Metz on Sunday, February 15, 2009 to see who moves on to play the O’s in the semi-finals.  The winners of the semi-finals will move on to the championship!

In the Senior 25+ Division, the top four teams in each county will clinch a playoff berth. Once all positions are clinched, the teams will be ranked from 1 to 4 based on points in each county (refer to tie-breaker rules in the Rule Book accordingly).  The Quarterfinals will feature the #1 team facing the #4 team and the #2 and #3 teams facing each other in the other game.  The County Championship Game (Semi Finals) will consist of the winner of each quarter-final games. The Senior 25+ Division Championship Game will consist of the winner of each of the County Championship Games (Dade vs. Broward)

In Broward County, the top four seeds are set as the Lauderdale Reds are going into another playoff as the #1 seed with a 9-2 record and one game left.  The Fort Lauderdale Yankees clinched the #2 seed with an 8-2-2 record (Reds take tie breaker over Yankees with 2 head to head wins as both teams presently have 18 points).  The #3 seed belongs to the Pompano Brewers who had an impressive 6-6 record while the Coral Springs Tigersclinch the #4 seed with a 4-6-1 record and one game left.  The Quarterfinals will feature the Reds playing the Tigers while the Yankees host the Brewers.

In Dade County, things are still up in the air as the #1 seed will be determined after the final week of the regular season and the Miami Brewers (7-2-2, 16 points) and Miami Blues (8-1-2, 18 points) are both in contention for the top seed.  If the Blues win, they will clinch the #1 seed.  If they lose and the Brewers win, the tie breaker rule will be used as the teams tied in their only regular season match up.  As for the #3 and #4 seeds, the last regular season games will also determine these seeds between the Miami Marlins (3-7-1), Florida Yankees (2-9) and Miami Giants (1-7-1).

In the Premier Division, the top team in each division will clinch a playoff berth as well as the top 2 wild card teams from either division.  Once all positions are clinched, the teams will be ranked from 1 to 4 based on points (refer to tie-breaker rules in the Rule Book accordingly).  The Semi Finals will feature the #1 team facing the #4 team and the #2 and #3 teams facing each other in the other game.  The Championship Game will consist of the winner of each semi-final games.

SFBL Represents at 2008 Fall ClassicThe SFBL represented well this year at the 2008 MSBL Fall Classic.  The Miami Nationals, South Florida Zorros and Coral Gables Athletics(playing as the Coral Gables Bridemaids) each made the playoffs in the very competitive tournament, but none were able to bring home a championship.

The Zorros, managed by Atilio Ambrosio, played in the 18+ National division and went 2-1 in round robin competition before losing to the eventual champs in the Semi Finals.  The team has played in multiple classics in the past and has one championship in its trophy case.

Both the Nationals, managed by Paul Guelmes, and the Bridesmaids, managed by Miguel Garcia, played in the 18+ American Division and posted 3-1 round robin records.  Both teams had been finalists in past classics, but were yet to bring home a championship.  The Bridesmaids entered the playoffs as the #2 overall seed but were ousted by the Georgia Barons in the quarterfinals.  The Nationals went deeper in the playoffs as they advanced to the semi-finals after defeating the Indianapolis Dodgers in the quarterfinals but would also go home disappointed after losing to the eventual champs, the St Pete Gamecocks.

The SFBL wants to congratulate all the teams and their respective managers for the excellent showing at the tournament.  Tournament competition is truly a step above regular season play.

Fall 2007 Playoff RecapsPremier Division:

After holding off the Miami’s Band in a 1-run thriller in the 9th of the Semi’s, the Miami Red Sox, managed by Mickey Filippucci, won their 4th SFBL Championship as they defeated the Coral Gables Athletics 3-1.  The game would prove to be a thriller as two of the league’s aces battled out and Jade McCrystal took the win for the Sox over Jaime Cruz.  Each hurler pitched complete games, but it was McCrystal who was able to fend off the A’s who had an incredible 11-1 regular season and then defeated the Miami Police Force 11-1 in the Semi’s.

After winning the Premier Division, the Red Sox traveled to Fort Myers for the Hardball Championship to take on the San Carlos All Stars who swept the Fort Myers Hitmen in their best of three Championship Series.  Unfortunately, the Sox could not complete the feat as they lost to the All-Stars 8-3.

Senior 25+ Division:

For the first time in their team’s history, the Boca Red Sox won a SFBL Championship.  Managed by Eric Lyon, the Red Sox defeated the Miami Brewers 14-0 in the Championship Game.  Josh Remondelli was outstanding in his pitching performance as he pitched 6 innings of shutout ball to lead the way.  Shaun McAndrews, the division’s MVP and regular season batting champ who broke the single season hit record with 26 hits led the way on the offensive attack with a 2-3 performance, hitting a home run and a double while driving in 3 runs.

To get to the Championship Game, the Sox had to defeat the Deerfield White Sox in quarterfinal play which they did 17-1 and then the Lauderdale Reds in the Broward County Championship by a score of 9-6.  This game would prove to be the most difficult for the Sox as they came from behind and defeated the Reds after being down 5 runs early.  The Reds had advanced to the Championship after defeating the Fort Lauderdale Yankees 13-6 in the quarterfinals.

The Miami Brewers, managed by Steve Medina, had a fantastic Fall 2007 Season as they finished the season with an 8-4 record and also had a good showing at the MSBL Disney Classic where they made the Semi-Finals.  The Brewers advanced to the Senior Championship after defeating the Dade Pirates 14-3 in the Dade County Championship behind a complete game performance from Rob Ureta who also homered in the game.

Masters’ 35+ Division:

In what is proving to be a great rivalry, the Miami B-Top Orioles defeated the Southern Yankees 2-0 to capture their 4th SFBL Championship!!!  The Orioles and Yankees (3-time SFBL Champs) have met in the last three Championship Games and had split the last two seasons.  This season would prove to be the Orioles who defeated the Yankees in their only regular season contest as both teams ended their regular seasons with a 9-3 record.

In the Championship Game, the Orioles had a combined shutout performance from Jesus Alfonso and Alex Alvarez to defeat the Yankees.  The Orioles, managed by Emilio Barron , advanced to the Championship after defeating the Fort Lauderdale Orioles 14-4 behind the offensive attacks of Dan Davila (3-5, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) and Placido Estevez (2-4, 2-run HR, 3 R).  The Southern Yankees defeated the Miami Pirates 14-7 behind a complete game from Joe Feller.

Premier Division: The Coral Gables Athletics (11-0) have clinched the #1 seed in the division while the newcomers to the division, Miami’s Band, has clinched the #2 seed.  The final two seeds also appears to be a battle between three teams as the Miami Police Force (2-6) are trying to catch up to the Miami Red Sox (4-2) and the SouthCom Mariners (4-2).  There are a lot of games left for these three teams and head to head match ups will be crutial!

Senior 25+ Division: In Broward County, the Boca Red Sox appear to be the team to beat as they are 8-1 but are yet to clinch the #1 seed in the county as the Lauderdale Reds have also only lost 1 game, with a 5-1 record.  The National Division in Broward County is also up for grabs as theDeerfield White Sox (4-5) trail the Fort Lauderdale Yankees (5-3) by only 2 points with 3-4 games left.  The Coral Springs Tigers will have to pull off a big string of wins to get themselves back into the playoff race.

In Dade County, there appears to be a three way battle for the #1 seed as only 3 points divides three teams.  The Miami Brewers are leading the way with an 8-1 record, but the Dade Pirates (6-1-1) and newcomers, Dade Tigers (6-2-1) are not too far behind.  The Miami Rays and Florida Yankees are only 2 points apart with 3 games left in search of the final playoff spot in Dade County.

SFBL Sends Three Teams to 2008 MSBL Disney Classic Semi FinalsThe SFBL continued to represent well in MSBL national tournaments as three of its teams made the Semi Finals in the Annual MSBL Disney Classic held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.  The Miami Brewers, formally Kendall Reds, managed by Steve Medina, went 1-2 in round robin play in the 25+ to clinch a playoff berth before going down in the Semi’s.  The Coral Gables Athletics, fresh off a semi-final showing at the Fall Classic, once again made it to the Semi Finals in the 18+ division, but fell short of their first national tournament championship.  And, the Miami Nationals, who are set to return to the SFBL this coming Spring also made it to the Semi’s in the 18+ division.  The tournament was a great success for three teams and was great fun for all the players that participated.  Tournament action continues to be the highest level of adult baseball.  The SFBL will be hosting its Annual Miami Open Baseball Tournament in May during Memorial Day Weekend.  More Info to Come. Bums Represent SFBL in 2008 NABA Citrus ClassicThe South Florida Beach Bums, managed by Charles Sano, played in their first national tournament this past weekend as they ventured to West Palm Beach to play in the annual NABA Citrus Classic.  The 2-Time SFBL Champion South Florida Beach Bums finished pool play as the #2 seed and were eliminated in the playoffs by the 2007 NABA National Champion NY-NJ White Sox by a score of 6-2 on a cold and rainy Sunday night. The Beach Bums had a chance to win the Pool Championship and have a bye into Monday’s championship if they beat the defending Citrus Classic Champion Caribbean Tigres but the Tigres won 3-1. The Tigres went on two win the ’08 Citrus Classic, defeating the White Sox 7-3 on Monday morning.  The experience was great and now the Bums know what they need to do to prepare for their next national tournament.

SFBL Visits Fort Myers Hardball For Double-HeaderFor the first time in almost a year, the SFBL sent over a team to Fort Myers for a double-header this past Sunday, 1/13/08.  The Coral Gables Athletics traveled to South Fort Myers High School to take on the Cape Coral Yankees and Fort Myers Hitmen and were victorious in both games.  Former SFBL Champs, Rey’s Pizza, traveled to Fort Myers during the Spring 2006 Season to take on the Naples Cubs and Hitmen and split the double-header.  This season would prove to be different as the A’s, two-time Florida Hardball Champs, were able to use their strong pitching to take both games.  This is a trend that the SFBL would like to incorporate into the season schedule in upcoming seasons.  Presently, the SFBL Premier Division Champs take on the Fort Myers Champs in the Florida Hardball Championship.  The Hitmen are the defending champs and thus the SFBL Champs will have to travel to Fort Myers this season for the Championship. Coral Gables Athletics Take Home NABF Fall Classic Championship in Orlando, FLFrom Friday, September 28 through Sunday, September 30, 2007, the A’s participated in the inaugural Orlando NABF Fall Classic Tournament.  The A’s were invited by the tournament by the St Pete Blue Jays and Robert Nunez.  The two teams combined to put together a strong nucleus of players to bring home a championship.
The A’s played 3 round robin games going 3-0 and then won a semi-final and championship game on Sunday to take home their 2nd tournament of the year.  The A’s were led by strong pitching and tight defense as the offense was a bit scarce in this wood bat competition.  It was a great weekend of baseball and the A’s look forward for further collaborations with the Jays to keep on playing in hardball tournaments!

Letter to League MembersDear Member Ball Player:I am writing this letter to provide all members of the South Florida Baseball League an update as to what is going on with the effort to create a competing adult baseball league here in Miami.

To state it simply, the South Florida Baseball League has just become an independent league.  As of January 1, 2007, the South Florida Baseball League officially ended its ties with the national organization, Men’s Senior Baseball League (MSBL), based out of Melville, New York.  This was due to a simple business decision.  The league was not getting enough value for the affiliation dues it’s been paying for the past 15 years.  This change will not affect you, the local ball player, in any way.

The South Florida Baseball League will continue to operate as usual – running two seasons per year as well as hosting two annual statewide tournaments each year – the Miami Open (Memorial Day) and the Florida Cup (Labor Day).  With visiting teams from New York, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Fort Myers and Palm Beach, to name a few, the tournaments always prove to be dynamite.  Next season, Spring 2007, will be our 30th consecutive season of operation – and our 16th year of operation!  Our Spring 2007 Season commences March 18 so be ready to put on those spikes again.  Opening Day is right around the corner.

I like to think that what we have down here is some “pretty good” Florida Hardball.  On that note, I would like to formally introduce you to our West Coast sister league, called Fort Myers Hardball, which operates in the West Coast, namely Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Bonita Spring, and Naples.  Rapidly becoming a great rivalry, the West Coast champions play for the Florida Hardball Championship against the East Coast champions (SFBL) at the end of each season.  This added dimension only adds to the excitement of playing Florida Hardball.

I thank you for your loyalty and support – it is much appreciated.  I remain committed to making the SFBL along with our Florida Hardball brand one of the best adult baseball leagues in the country.

Sincerely, Mickey Filippucci

2006 Florida Cup Championship – Orlando Wins! The Orlando All Stars shocked the South Florida Mets scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning to win the 2006 Florida Cup by a final score of 4-3.  In a fabulous game at Flamingo Stadium in Miami Beach, both teams had numerous chances to put the game away but could not get back to back hits.  Orlando even left the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the ninth.  We congratulate the Orlando squad for their success!  Having beaten teams from Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach, they have earned the right to the title of Florida Cup champions! October 9, 2006

2006 Spring Season Playoff RecapsThey were quoted in the scores section of the webpage as a possible dynasty in the making and with two MSBL 35+ Senior DivisionChampionships in two seasons, the Miami Orioles, managed by Pete Reyes, are definitely on their way.  After finishing the regular season with a 9-4 record and earning a first round playoff bye, the Orioles awaited the victor of the Broward Cardinals and the Southern Yankees Semi Final Game.  In a tough Semi-Final game, the Cardinals defeated the Yankees 9-7 but would end up losing a well played championship game to the Orioles by a score of 2-1.  The Orioles were led by Emilio Barron who went 3-3 and drove in the winning run in the 7th inning! Congrats to the Orioles!

In the MSBL 25+ Senior Division, the SFBL witnessed a newcomer to the league go 7-3-1 in the regular season and then roll off three consecutive wins with a thrilling Championship Game to win the SFBL Championship!  The Coral Springs Royals, managed by Vinnie Birrittieri, defeated theMiami Nationals 7-6 in the Championship Game with a 3-run walk-off home run from Jack Steinberg! Division MVP, Andrew Medina, earned the victory, pitching the first seven innings of the game and then closing out the ninth in a pitcher re-entry move.  The game was truly a memorable game that will be put away in the books.  The Royals made it to the Championship Game by defeating the Lauderdale Reds 6-5 in the 10th inning of the Quarterfinals and then defeating the Fort Lauderdale Yankees 20-11 in the Semi-Finals.  The Nationals, managed by JJ Sanchez, had another incredible regular season going 11-1 (their only loss being a forfeit loss) and then defeating the Miami Dade Mets 7-6 in the Quarterfinals and then Pro 5 Sports by a score of 8-3 in the Semi’s.  The Miami Wolverines and Boca Red Sox were also quarterfinalists this past season.  Great feats for both teams as they are both relative newcomers!

In the MABL 18+ Adult Division, another newcomer to the league won the Championship as the Havana Braves, led by their dominant left handed pitcher Bobbie Medio, defeated the Miami Rockies 5-1 in the Championship Game.  The Rockies were defending their Championship from one season ago and had another great season going 7-3.

In the Premier 18+ Division, a familiar face, the Coral Gables Athletics, managed by Miguel Garcia, had once again reached the Championship Game in search of back-to-back championships and their 3rd overall.  However, they ran into Rey’s Pizza, managed by Peter Chao, and led by the powerful left handed arm of Juan Prado and the powerful bat of Jose Cano.  Rey’s Pizza defeated the A’s 8-2 in the Championship Game.  It was their 4th consecutive win over the A’s after defeating them twice in the regular season and once in the Semi Finals of the Miami Open.  The A’s were ahead in the game 2-1 going into the 6th, however, the Pizza Men’s bats woke up and took the lead and never looked back.  To reach the Championship Game, Rey’s Pizza defeated the South Florida Angels and A’s defeated the Broward Trojans.

Overall, it was another great SFBL season with great playoff runs.  The League would like to congratulate all of the teams who won their division along with all the playoff teams!

2006 Florida Cup RecapDespite being challenged by a weekend full of rain, the SFBL is proud to announce that it was able to host the 6th Annual Florida Cup held over Labor Day Weekend.  The tournament featured 8 teams from all over South Florida as well as Orlando. The tournament was led by familiar teams as the South Florida Mets and Rey’s Pizza each went undefeated in round robin play.  The Orlando All-Stars and Boca Red Sox each went 2-1 to clinch playoff berths.  Only one Semi-Final game was able to played over the Labor Day weekend due to the rain as the Mets defeated the Red Sox 9-5.  Rey’s Pizza would end up traveling to Orlando to the play the All-Stars in the other semi-final game.  The game would go to the All-Stars by a score of 5-2.  The All-Stars will now travel down to Miami to play the Mets in the Championship Game.  The date is still being determined.

The League Office would like to thank all the teams and players who participated in the tournament and encourage all league members to go to the next level of senior league play….tournament play!

Spring 2006 Season Playoff RacesIt is that time in the season where each game seems to matter more.  Here is what is going on in each division as the playoffs are almost upon us.Premier Division:Playoff seedings are completely in the air as the top four teams are within 4 points of each other with the Broward Trojans leading the way after back to back wins over the Rey’s Pizza and the defending champs, Coral Gables Athletics.  The newcomers to the league, South Florida Angels, are within 3 points of 1st place.  This will be a race to the end.

MABL 18+ Division:

The Havana Braves are leading the charge for the playoff BYE.  Despite a recent loss to the Miami Rockies, who are 3 points behind, the Braves are leading the way with 13 points with 3 games to go.  The 3rd place spot is also a race as the Florida Marlins look to return to the playoffs, but they will have to hold off the Bayamo Rebels who are 2 points back

MSBL 28+ Division:

In Broward County, the Lauderdale Reds are once again atop their division, one loss better than the Boca Red Sox who had an incredible regular season.  In the National League, the Coral Springs Royals are #1 in their division and their is a tight race for #2 between the Deerfield White Sox and Fort Lauderdale Yankees. 1 point is all that divides the two! It will come down to the last few regular season games.

In Dade County, the defending Champs, Miami Nationals have once again posted an impressive regular season going 9-1 thus far and are atop their division. Newcomers, the Miami Wolverines, are trying to hold off the Kendall Reds for the #2 spot in the division. In the National League, the Pro 5 Sports have clinched the #1 seed and it seems that the Miami Dade Mets are going to be able to hold off the Miami Red Sox unless they lose their final game and the Red Sox win two in a row which will result in a tie.

Masters’ 38+ Division:

This is the only division that has been all but determined as the Miami Orioles have clinched the #1 seed and the first round BYE.  The Broward Cardinals will square off against the Southern Yankees in the Semi’s.  Still to be determined is who will be home team in the Semi’s as the Broward Cardinals have to finish their regular season games.

It will definitely be a great couple of weeks!!!

2006 Holiday ClassicWith the amazing Wide World of Sports Baseball Complex serving as the host field, the 7th annual MSBL Disney Holiday Classic was played during Martin Luther King Weekend.  Once again, the SFBL was well represented as the Miami Nationals (Gamma Nationals), managed by JJ Sanchez, who were fresh off a good finish at the Fall Classic, made it to the Championship Game.  The Nationals went 2-1 in the round robin play and defeated the Georgia Barons 5-4 in the Semi Finals to reach the Championship Game vs the Hattisburg Black Sox.  The Nationals lost a heart breaker 2-1.  The Black Sox were the only team in the tournament to beat the Nationals.  The League Office would like to extend a well-deserved congratulations to the Nationals and JJ who represented the SFBL well in National Play and will be featured in the upcoming Hardball Magazine! For league members who have not played in a local SFBL or national MSBL tournament, this is what senior league baseball is all about.  It is a step above the regular Sunday league play, allowing you to play in some of the finest fields locally and around the country against some of the best competition!

There are also two local tournaments which are played annually, the Miami Open held during Memorial Day Weekend in May and the Florida Cupheld during Labor Day Weekend in September.  Please visit the SFBL Tournament Page for more info!

2005 Fall ClassicThe 14th annual Fall Classic in Clearwater – St. Pete, Florida once again proved successful for the SFBL as the league sent 5 teams to the tournament and all 5 teams made the playoffs.  The most successful team this year were the Miami-Coral Gables Athletics managed by Miguel Garcia, who made their second consecutive Championship Game.  Despite losing in the Championship Game, the A’s represented the SFBL well as they played 7 games in 3.5 days.

The South Florida Mets, defending Miami Open and Florida Cup Champs and led by Attilio Ambrosio, competed in the 18+ National Division and made it to the Semi-Finals where they were once again eliminated by the Southern Maryland Assault.  The Mets lost to the Assault last year in the Championship Game and defeated them 2 years ago for a Fall Classic Championship.

The Miami Nationals (Mont Blanc Nationals) competed in the 18+ American Division.  Managed by JJ Sanchez and defending Summer League Champs, the Nats made it to the Quarterfinals where they were knocked out of the tournament by the A’s in a memorable game between two of the top SFBL teams.

The Miami Red Sox, managed by Mickey Filippucci, played in the 28+ division where they went 3-2 in round robin play and qualifying for the  playoffs by beating a previously undefeated defending champion Maryland Monarchs team.  Alas, the Sox ran into a minor leaguer southpaw and ended up losing in the Quarterfinals.  Last, but not least, the South Florida Sea Dogs, managed by Steve Rogers and who still hold the MSBL record with 5 National Tournament Championships, played in the ultra-competitive 28+ National Division and went 3-3 in the round robin before losing in the Quarterfinals.

The SFBL extends its congratulations to all five teams for their success in the national tournament.

For league members who have not played in a local SFBL or national MSBL tournament, this is what senior league baseball is all about.  It is a step above the regular Sunday league play, allowing you to play in some of the finest fields locally and around the country against some of the best competition!

The next national tournaments are the Disney Holiday Classic in January 2006 at Disney’s Wild World of Sports and the Las Vegas Kickoff Classic in March 2006.  The SFBL plans on sending teams to each of these tournaments.  If your team is interested or if you are a single player who is interested, the league asks that you contact the League Office immediately at 305.663.2521.

There are also two local tournaments which are played annually, the Miami Open held during Memorial Day Weekend in May and the Florida Cupheld during Labor Day Weekend in September.  Please visit the SFBL Tournament Page for more info!

Hurricane Wilma goes Back-to-BackHurricane Wilma forced the cancellation of back-to-back Sundays for the second time in the 13 year history of the SFBL.  The first time this happened was back in the inaugural year, 1992, when Hurricane Andrew struck.

This time around, last Sunday cancelled (October 23rd) due to the arrival of Hurricane Wilma.  The upcoming Sunday, Oct. 30, is being cancelled because of the heavy damage the hurricane inflicted on South Florida.  We have light poles down and fences blown in on most fields.  Plus, with no power, no auto fuel and no telecom, league players are in no condition to play ball this Sunday.  Stay tuned for a revised schedule, but the bottom line to the season schedule is:  get ready to play in January!

2005 Florida Cup – Labor Day Tournament With the Homestead Sports Complex playing host to a SFBL tournament once again, the 5th-annual 2005 Florida Cup played up to expectations during the 2005 Labor Day weekend.  The tournament featured two 4-team divisions with some of the best teams locally and nationally competing for the $750 cash prize.  The tournament was the first SFBL tournament to host a team from outside the state, as the New York Seminoles traveled down to compete in the Florida Cup.  However, the story remains the same as the South Florida Mets, led by Attilio Ambrosio took home another tournament championship, their 6th SFBL Tournament Championship.

The Mets, who went 2-1 in the round robin, were led by great pitching and hitting and made it to the Championship Game by defeating the Seminoles in the Semi Finals.  The Seminoles went 2-0-1 in the round robin to make it to the playoffs, but the Mets proved too much for them.  The Mets squared off against the surprise of the Florida Cup, the Miami Red Sox, who featured a mixed MABL 18+ division team.  The Red Sox first surprised the Coral Gables Athletics in the final round robin game to displace the A’s from reaching the playoffs and then defeated the Fort Lauderdale Mets, premier division champs and undefeated in the round robin, by a score of 7-6 to reach the Championship.

In the Championship Game, the Mets took an early 3-1 lead and opened the game wide open in the 8th and 9th innings to bring home another tournament Championship by a final score of 9-1.  The SFBL would like to congratulate the South Florida Mets and Attilio on a great performance and would like to thank all the teams who participated for a great weekend of baseball.

2005 Summer League RecapFueled by the demand of the league to have a season between the Spring and Fall Seasons, the SFBL just completed its 4th Summer League.  This year proved to be the most successful as 12 teams competed in the 6-game mini-season.  This year, the Miami Lakes Red Sox and Broward Metzproved to be the teams to reckon with as each went undefeated in the regular season.  In the End, the Red Sox (which will go as the Miami Nationalsin the upcoming Fall Season), led by JJ Sanchez took home the title 8-3.  The Red Sox were led by strong pitching all season and it did not let them down in the Championship Game as Alex Pereira pitched another gem preserving the Red Sox perfect ending to a perfect season. Spring 2005 Playoff RecapPremier Division: The Fort Lauderdale Mets carried a late regular season charge into the playoffs and took home their first SFBL Championship in their inaugural season. To do so, they defeated the defending champs, the Coral Gables Athletics 10-4 in the semi finals and then beat the South Florida Sun Devils, also former SFBL Champs, 10-6 in the Championship Game.  The Devils beat the UM Knights in a semi-final thriller 7-6 to reach the championship.  Congratulations to the Mets

MABL 18+ Adult: The South Florida Gators led by manager Cesar Ronda won their first SFBL Championship.  Cesar changed team names and that proved to the trick…his pitching late in the season didn’t hurt them either.  The Gators, who started the season 1-4-1 ended their season strong and defeated the Kendall Marlins in a tight 9-7 battle in the Semi-Finals before jumping all over the Miami Industriales 15-0 in the Championship Game.  The Industriales beat the South Beach Bombers in the Semi’s to reach the Championship Game.  The Gators were also led offensively byAlbert Carmenates who led the league in base hits and runs scored during the regular season.

MSBL 28+ Senior: A battle for the ages emerged in the MSBL 28+ as two teams quite familiar to the playoffs met in the Championship Game that will go down as one the best played MSBL games in SFBL history.  In the end, the Lauderdale Reds (10 playoff appearances, 2 championships going into the season), managed by Gary Lazarus and led by their Cy-Young Winner, Lincoln Moquette defeated the Perrine Monarchs (13 playoff appearances, 4 championships going into the season) 2-0 in the Championship Game.  The game was a true pitching gem and there was also some great defense play.  The Reds reached the Championship Game by defeating the Fort Lauderdale Yankees in the Quarterfinals and Broward Red Sox in the Broward County Championship.  Offensively, the Reds were led by Richie Rivera who led the league in base hits (27) and home runs (3) and was named the Division’s MVP.  The Monarchs reached the Championship Game by defeating the Pro 5 Sports 15-5 in the Quarterfinals and theKendall Reds in a 4-3 Dade County Championship thriller.

Masters’ 38+: The Championship Game between the Miami Mariners and Fort Lauderdale Angels is pending.

New Hardball Features SFBL SuccessIf you are yet to skim through the latest Hardball Magazine (Winter 2004/2005), you are missing out on a good amount of SFBL teams who were covered in Championship games at this past year’s MSBL/MABL Fall Classic.  Featured in pages 64-69 are three teams who reached the Championship Game in their respected divisions.

The first team featured were the South Florida Mets who failed to defend their 2003 Fall Classic Championship, losing a heart breaker to Southern Maryland.  Their game was the first MSBL game played at the Phillies’ new Spring Training stadium, Brighthouse Network Field.  One of the top SFBL pitchers, CJ Hufman was captured in one of the pictures.

The second story featured the Championship Game between the Daytona Beach Rangers and Coral Gables Athletics. The A’s could not complete a perfect tournament as their only loss in the tournament was to the Rangers by a score of 9-1.  Featured on the page were Jason Privett, the A’s ace and 3-time SFBL Cy-Young Winner and Denis Pujals, who is seen hitting but was one of the A’s starting pitchers.

The final story showed off the most famous of the SFBL teams, the South Florida Sea Dogs who were going after their 6th Fall Classic Championship.  They already hold the record with 5 National Tournament Championships.  The story went ahead and declared them a dynasty!  The League Office must commend Steve Rogers for forming such a strong tournament squad over the years.  Featured in the pictures was Jim Eddy, the Dogs leadoff hitter and SS who had a great tournament with the Dogs and also played with the SF Mets, the weekend prior.

Congratulations to all the teams!

The SFBL once again encourages all League Teams and Players to get involved in tournaments, locally and abroad.  The competition is a step above the rest and it really is a bunch of fun!  Visit the SFBL Tournament Page or contact the League Office via email for more info, sfbl@hotmail.com

Reporting Scores, Stats, Coaches’ Poll, Player of the WeekManagers are required to report scores on a weekly basis by Monday, end of business day.  They are also required to login team stats by Wednesday, end of business day.  Teams who do not have reported stats will not be allowed to play in the playoffs.

Players – if you do not see yourself in the Leaderboards and believe that you should be there, check your team stats.  The reason is probably because your manager has not loaded the stats.

Managers and players are also encouraged to nominate players on a weekly basis for Player of the Week.  The League would like to recognize those players who had great achievements, but participation was low last season.  Please email your nominations every week to sfbl@hotmail.com

Managers are also encouraged to participate in the Weekly Coaches’ Poll.  Email your Top 5 Teams each week to sfbl@hotmail.com.  The votes will be counted and reported accordingly.

Thank you for all your help and have a great season!

Spring 2005 Managers MeetingThe SFBL held its pre-season Manager’s Meeting on Wednesday night at Don Shula’s Perfect Season banquet hall in Miami Lakes.  With the majority of managers showing up, the SFBL made several announcements and is set to kick off its 26th Season!  Here is a recap of the meeting:

The League congratulated the Fall 2004 Champions –

Masters’ – Southern Yankees

MSBL 28+ – Miami Police Force

MABL 18+ – SouthCom Mariners

Premier – Coral Gables Athletics

This was the first time in a long time that all four divisions had new champions.  Perhaps, it is the time for the new blood in the SFBL.  It was also the only the second time in 13 seasons that a team other than the Perrine Monarchs, Miami Red Sox, Fort Lauderdale Yankees or Lauderdale Reds won the MSBL 28+.  And the Coral Gables A’s finally broke through to end their hex, after having lost their first three championships.

Tournament action:  All teams were encouraged to get involved in the next level of action, the tournament level.  The next local tournament is the 2005 Miami Open, which takes place in South Florida on Memorial Day Weekend.  Entry fee is $750 per team.  More info will be posted in the next couple of weeks on the website….stay posted.  Check out the Tournament Page.

Most important, the League announced three rule changes for this coming season:

1. If a a team cancels a game within 48 hours of the game time, the team will forfeit the game.

2. The winners in each division will automatically make the playoffs.  The next two spots will be determined using wild card format allowing the teams with the best records to make the playoffs.  This would allow for three teams from one division to make the playoffs.  (Masters’ Division is the exception, where the team with the best record will receive an automatic BYE with the next two wild card teams playing the first round playoff game).

3.  Underage players in the 18+ division are strictly prohibited.  However, underage players may participate with teams in the 28+ and 38+ divisions – under the condition that (1) they have special approval from the league office (2) their ages are accurately disclosed on the team roster and (3) they may NOT pitch or catch.  Any violation of this rule will result in an automatic forfeit.

The first rule was created to emphasize the need to have a roster of at least 13 players so that missing 2-3 players on a weekly basis will not force a team to require a PPD game and of course, to avoid forfeits.
