History:
In its 32nd season, the SFBL had 27 teams play in 4 different divisions of competive hardball.  The teams continued to play 12 regular season games with the top teams in 3 of the 4 divisions continuing on to the playoffs. In the MABL 18+ Premier Division, the season proved to be incredibly competive as 5 teams went into the last week of regular season play with a shot at one of four playoff spots.  In the end, for the fourth time in the team’s history, the Coral Gables Athletics, managed by Miguel Garcia, won the SFBL Premier Division Championship.  The A’s defeated the Miami Police Force, managed by Jorge Gomez, 12-7 on Sunday, September 21, 2008.  This was the second time the teams had squared off in the championship and the A’s have won both match-ups.  The A’s came into the playoffs as the fourth seed but were able to defeat the Miami Nationals 7-5 in the Semi Finals.  The Police defeated the  Miami’s Band 5-4 in their semi-final game.  Both semi-final games were decided in the 9th inning.  The A’s played the Fort Myers Hitmen almost 6 months later in the Hardball Championship and brought home their 3rd such title, defeating the Hitmen 4-3 in another thriller between these cross state rivals! The A’s were led by Eric Perez who won his 4th SFBL Batting Crown and League MVP award.  Eric finished the season hitting .607 and also led the league in base hits (17) and on-base average (.667)
For the second season in a row, the Boca Red Sox took on the Miami Brewers in the MSBL 25+ Senior Division Championship and the Sox were able to repeat as Champs defeating the Brewers 12-6.  The Sox, managed by Eric Lyon, were able to advance to the championship after defeating the Lauderdale Reds in the Broward County Championship.  The Reds had defeated the Sox in back to back games earlier in the year, but were unable to figure out Josh Remondelli as he pitched a complete game, striking out 13 to help advance the Sox to the championship.  The Brewers, managed by Steve Medina, advanced to the Championship Game after defeating the Kendall Mariners in the Dade County Championship.  The Brewers took advantage of 11 walks and timely hitting from Alain Milanes and Javier Rodriguez.  Their 9-strong motto carried them into the playoffs with the best record in the division.  The Boca Red Sox were led all year by Ponchi Rodriguez and  Alvaro Gomez on the offensive side.  Rodriguez led the team in hitting with .542 batting average, RBI (23) and 26 base hits, while Gomez led the team with 3 HR’s and was third in batting average, hitting .452.  On the hill, it was all Josh Remondelli who led the league with a 7-2 record and was second in the league with 59 K’s.After making a strong late season push, the Broward Black Sox, managed by Scott Ferron, were able to defeat the Broward Cardinals 9-7 on Sunday, 8/24/08, to take home the Masters’ Division Championship.  The Sox finished the season as the third seed going into the playoffs and had to beat the defending champs, the Miami B-Top Orioles to advance.  They were able to do behind strong pitching and defense as they defeated the O’s 10-3 in the Semi Finals.  The Cardinals advanced to the Championship after defeating the top-seed Broward Orioles 21-13 in their semifinal game. There were no playoffs played in the MABL 18+ Adult Division.During the season, the SFBL hosted the 11th Annual Miami Open Baseball Tournament which was held in Miami, FL during Memorial Day Weekend.  The tournament wrapped up on Monday, May 26, 2008 in classic fashion as the  Coral Gables Athletics, managed by Miguel Garcia, defeated the Fort Myers Hitmen 6-5 with a walk-off single to left field from Matt Stubbs in the bottom of the ninth.  The game was a see-saw battle between two teams who played each other 3 times in a matter of a week.  After the Hitmen, managed by  Grey Huber, took an early 2-0 lead, the A’s battled back to take the lead in the 3rd and never look back.  Behind tournament MVP,  Jason Privett, the A’s battled and stopped a late Hitmen rally to capture their first SFBL Tournament Championship.  Privett pitched two 9 inning complete games in the tournament to earn MVP honors. The 2008 Florida Cup which was supposed to be played during Labor Day Weekend was cancelled because of the possible effects of Hurricane Gustav.
